Eli Whitney and The Cotton Gin
South- They were mainly all farm, and needed lots of slaves to work on their plantations. After the invention of the Cotton Gin they really needed slaves to work becuase it would make the production of cotton so much faster. Making it faster would be great for the economy because it would get more and more money. The south believed in state right's because if they changed it to Federal rights then there would be no more slaves. The cotton gin was the south's assembly line. It made it possibly to produce cotton more efficiently. Since this invention the south became really dependent on slaves. When the north wanted to take away the slaves the south got very defensive. This was a cause because the north wanted to take their slaves away when they needed them for the cotton gin. Eli Whitney was the creator of the cotton gin. He was a very important business man for the south.
Harriet Beecher Stowe
North- Mainly based on big businesses. They didn't use slaves. Many slaves used the Underground Raiload to escape to the North because it was safe up there. The North believed in Federal Government Power because it would help their economy the best. Some didn't like the way they did things because there was long hours and bad working conditions. There was many factories and alot of it was unfair.The Compromise of 1850 said that is California was a free state then the other states could choose.
Harriet Beecher Stowe- She was the author of an anti-slavery book. She was big into the abolitionist movement. She got her education from Hartford Female Academy founded by her sister.
